pompous Cure Your PAS to Have a Successful Business

Are you stricken by PAS? Pompous Ass Syndrome? Read this article, Distinguished doctor charged with stealing candy at Stamford theater, and come back to see if you or someone you know has it.

There is really no room in a business for PAS. In fact, life is too short in all aspects to deal with folks who are stricken with PAS. Hopefully they will recognize it, or someone will share this article with them and they will take control and begin corrective remedies.

Recently a very successful entrepreneur and good friend of mine shared a story with me about how great Seth Godin is live. While we were speaking she said, “OMG, Mitch you would love him, he is so down to earth and available, you know he is not at all pompous like some folks get…”

What does this mean exactly – like some folks get? Here is the thing and it is so important it must be said: We are all unique and have great gifts. The fact that some have achieved notoriety, fame, and monetary rewards does not make them rise above the human race. It is when they begin to behave in such a way, as if they have risen above the human race, that we must really consider why we should have anything at all to do with them.

This is one reason why taking the time, right in the beginning, to create in writing, your business strategy is so important. This is not your financial plan or your business plan, although they may be included. It is where you define your big, long-term vision, your mission, and your plan on how you will achieve these. When you write these down and keep them in front of you and refer to them often, the odds of you forgetting who you are and where you are heading and why are less likely to occur.

For Example: Is one of your goals for creating a successful business enterprise to contribute to a certain charitable organization? Have the description of the charity work they do in front of you as well. Remind yourself of this aspect of your mission every single day.

Carry Baggage Around Or Do You Check In Vs. Carry Baggage Around

IMG00003 20101204 1250 300x225 Carry Baggage Around Or Do You Check In Vs. Carry Baggage Around This is one of those subjects where each person has their own specific viewpoint and way of handling their baggage. When traveling how much do you pack? How many bags do you have with you? Are you the type of person who checks in a decent sized bag which carries most of your clothes, toiletries and possibly some extra reading material? The last time I checked the allowed baggage weight is limited to 50 lbs. per bag – after 50 lbs. – you must pay some heavy penalty fees. Does your check in bag usually weigh close to 50 lbs.?

Or are you the type of person who must carry your baggage wherever you go. This means when you travel you are carrying your baggage with you. On a flight you are walking down the aisle and if you turn a little bit to the left or right your shoulder bag smacks a person sitting in the aisle seat as you walk by. Yes, your baggage does impact others. At your first entrance to the airport going thru the security line your carry on baggage slows the line down as there is more to review compared to the person who checked in their bag. When you have a connecting flight and you need to rush a bit to catch the boarding time the baggage you are carrying with you slows you down.

Let’s now switch around this example. Instead of flights and traveling, let’s talk about building your business, working with clients or customers, networking and attending events. And the baggage you are carrying around is your personal baggage. Your issues, self doubt, your attitude, your mindset, all of this may be your personal baggage.

IMG00002 20101204 1243 300x225 Carry Baggage Around Or Do You Check In Vs. Carry Baggage Around What happens now? Do you carry around your baggage with you everywhere you go? Are you able to perform at a high level because you have learned how to check in your baggage? Or do you carry around your baggage with you everywhere you go? Are you trying to figure out how to check in that baggage as you see the impact your negativity has on others at an event?

The point here is simply to understand how much baggage you have and how to check it in. Your baggage does impact you and others. If your personal baggage is slowing you down, blocking you, impacting how people view you, you must identify your baggage and deal with it! Get some help and overcome your own baggage. Stop carrying around all of your baggage with you and either check it in or lose it!

Are Your Habits Holding You Back Or Moving You Closer To Success? It is a good idea to take a good look at your habits. Your personal habits, your work habits and your business habits. What is a habit?
From online dictionary -
hab·it –noun
1. an acquired behavior pattern regularly followed until it has become almost involuntary: the habit of looking both ways before crossing the street.
2. customary practice or use: Daily bathing is an American habit.
3. a particular practice, custom, or usage: the habit of shaking hands.
4. a dominant or regular disposition or tendency; prevailing character or quality: She has a habit of looking at the bright side of things.
5. addiction, esp. to narcotics (often prec. by the ).
6. mental character or disposition: a habit of mind.
7. characteristic bodily or physical condition.
The reason for placing this list of descriptions is for us to conduct an exercise. Write down two personal habits you have which clearly fall into two of these categories from 1 to 7. Do you have a personal habit you know annoys others? Write that habit down. What category above is that habit in? Okay, now think about your business and how you work. Write down three specific habits you have about how you work? What category are each of these habits in? Are these three habits high quality habits which you would teach others to learn? Let’s stay on your business and how you work. Write down three habits you have about how you work which you know are non-productive and these habits hold you back. Look at each one of these habits for a few minutes. Why do you have this habit? What do you need to do to change this habit? Is there another habit or behavior you know you should replace this habit with. Write down the new habit underneath the one you must replace. Now follow this same conversation with each of the other two non-productive habits. This will permit you to manage your habits. It is a way to hold yourself accountable.
A more effective method of conducting this exercise is to work with a mentor, a coach who will laser focus into you, your habits and your personal definition of your path to success. Take your personal inventory on a regular basis of your habits if you work with a mentor or coach or not. Your habit structure will propel you forward with great speed or hold you back indefinitely. The choice is yours.
